Change of weather causes immunity problems, wear warm gear to avoid illness

Local News

When the temperature outside goes from warm to cold, or vice-versa, our bodies have to acclimate to the temperature change, causing your resistance to viruses to lower.

Dr. Brad Fox, Family Physician at Allegheny Health Network, tells us, “When your resistance goes down, any bacteria or virus you’re exposed to has a better chance of taking hold so you can get sick. And what I say is… you didn’t get pneumonia because you didn’t put your coat on, you got pneumonia because you didn’t put your coat on. So really, it’s your body’s response… not the temperatures themselves.”

Dr. Fox says to try to avoid getting sick when the temperature jumps from high to low, wear appropriate clothing, layer if you need to, and always pack an extra jacket.
