The Jefferson Educational Society ended their global summit series Sunday with TV Political Commenter Chris Matthews.
A packed crowd at Gannon’s Hammermill Center on Sunday as Chris Matthews spoke during the Jefferson’s Global Summit Speaker Series.
Chris Matthews, Host of MSNBC’s ‘Hardball with Chris Matthews,’ says, “I’ve only been up here, like, once before, about 20 years ago. And really, I just wanted to do it because my friend, Steve Skully, from CSPAN, asked me to do it.”
Matthews commented on recent political news, his new book, and on how Erie County influenced the 2016 presidential race.
Matthews says, “I think Hillary Clinton made a mistake of not emphasizing it up here, not coming up enough, and Trump did come up a lot. And, he played the life card and he knew what he was doing. I mean the Democratic party in 2016 ignored this part of the country.”
Matthews also gave his thoughts on the 2020 Presidential Election and what he wants to see out of it.
“I think that there needs to be some thought given to balance and diversity and women.”
Matthews’ talk was the last installment of the Jefferson Global Summit Series which took place over a couple of weeks.
Ben Speggen, Director of Operations for the Jefferson Educational Society, says, “We were incredibly encouraged by this year’s success of the Global Summit, it’s been our most successful summit to date; we more than doubled ticket sales from last year.”
Speggen says the turn out for these events shows Erie can attract speakers of all caliber.
