City of Erie hosts Police and Fire Career Day event in hopes of increasing diversity

The City of Erie looks to increase diversity among its police and fire departments. 

Mayor Schember and his administration, along with police and fire chiefs, hosting an event at the Booker T. Washington Center tonight to talk about careers in police and fire. Nearly 100 people showed up to learn the steps on how to apply, test and qualify for both careers. A member from Mayor Schember’s administration says this is an initiative that designed to increase diversity among those departments.

“Often times, if you see people who look like you who understand your background, you are more susceptible to trust these individuals and also, you plant the seeds of hope into the minds of future generations that they can obtain to this level of sucess in Erie, PA,” said Michael Outlaw, Community Liasion for the City of Erie.

Officials hope to repeat the event this year at different locations throughout the city.
