A group of local college students give back to the Magee Women’s UPMC Hospital of Erie. Penn State Behrend nursing students held a book fair to stock the NICU unit of the women’s hospital.
Families will now have to read to babies who face extended stays in the hospital after birth. The Behrend students say reading to these babies can help strengthen their bond with family members. The reading also has some health benefits.
Brittney Carr, President Joys of Nursing Club and Behrend Nursing Major, says, “It can help with bonding with the parents and it can also help with their stabilization and their vital signs as well… It’s a wonderful feeling. Especially because I want to be a NICU nurse so it’s great to do this for the NICU.”
More than 260 books were collected and donated by students of the Joys of Nursing Club at Penn State Behrend.
