Community comes together to support Cathedral Prep student

A Cathedral Preparatory School student suffered a traumatic spinal injury Friday in an independent wrestling match in Ohio and now the Erie community is coming together.

Sophomore Ian Malesiewski had surgery late Sunday and is now resting and stabilized after a traumatic spinal injury.

Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy school officials and community members are coming together to donate services, money and prayer to the family.

Rev. Scott Jabo, president of Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria, said hundreds of people packed St. Jude the Apostle Church Friday for mass after receiving word about the injury.

Jabo said the school is working to put together fundraisers for the family’s mounting medical bills.

Jabo said the outpouring of support from the community to help the Malesiewski family has been overwhelming.

Cathedral Prep football head coach Mike Mischler said if any kid could fight this tough battle, it would be Ian, who also played football.

“He’s got a competitive spirit in him that’s unmatched by most anybody I’ve ever met,” Mischler said.  “He’s a fighter. He’s someone that just brings spirit to him both on the field and off. He’s a great student, he’s in student government. Just an all-around great kid.”

Jabo said they’re collecting cards, compiling a video of messages from students and staff for Malesiewski while he recovers.
