Community members celebrate Bhutanese culture today.

The Bhutanese community in Erie is made up of about four thousand people. Dozens came out to celebrate Sakela, the Kiranti people’s most important festival. The event honors the coming of spring and a new planting season.

“Our ancestors they totally depend upon art. So, to survive they had to always depend on the art, as we are now too,” said Bhutanese community member, Lalit Dumirai,

Community leaders say the majority of people practice Hinduism, but a significant number are Buddhist.
