A balloon for each heart broken after the horrific loss in Conneaut, Ohio.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,” said pastor Jan Walsh.
That prayer was a perfect fit to remember the short life of one-year old Sereniti Sutley.
The girl who neighbors said always had a smile on her face was raped and murdered allegedly by her mother’s boyfriend last Saturday.
Community members embraced her 22-year old mother.
She told us she’s not ready to speak about the loss, but her grandmother said the family mourns their angel.
“On Monday we’re gunna bury this beautiful baby, gone long before her time,” said Jean Carlo, Sereniti’s great grandmother.
For one local family, this tragedy feels like dejavu. They said that’s why they planned the vigil in the first place.
“We know that the community judged us. We know that people went after us and we didn’t do a damn thing,” said Missi English-Williams, the event coordinator.
English-Williams lost her granddaughter to murder three years ago.
Detective Michael Sullivan followed Sereniti’s case since day one.
He said people can do their part to stop these crimes.
“If you see something, say something. It’s kind of an old saying but more people, if they get involved, you know hopefully things like this wouldn’t happen,” said Detective Sullivan with the Conneaut Police Department.
The suspect in Sereniti’s murder is still on the lose.
Police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of 37-year old Joshua Gurto to come forward.
Carlo said that’s how communities start to put an end to child abuse all together.
“These babies are being hurt and they’re being hurt by people that were trusted and people told them they loved them,” said Carlo.
She told us her great granddaughter’s memory will live on by keeping other babies protected.
“She is safe from this world and all that this world had to offer her,” said Pastor Jan Walsh.
