Daydreaming is the number one driving distraction according to a new survey by Erie Insurance.

According to national police data covering the last five years, over 172,000 people were killed in car crashes and of those, at least one in ten involved distracted drivers.

An analysis of the data shows that there are several distractions involved in fatal crashes.  The number one distraction, 61%, are drivers who are daydreaming or otherwise “lost in thought”.  The second leading cause for distraction; cell phone use, which covers talking, listening, dialing, or texting; 14%.

And the third leading cause of distracted driving?  Outside distractions such as a person, object, or event.
