UPMC Hamot kicks off this weekend’s National Take Back Initiative by collecting unwanted medications Friday.
In just a half hour, Hamot filled five boxes full of unused, expired and unwanted prescription meds. It’s the first drop off of several being held this weekend.
Creams, liquids, prescription, over the counter and ointment medications are all accepted. Used needles and inhalers are not permitted.
The goal of the initiative is to keep these drugs out of the ground and water, and of course to keep them out of the hands of abusers.
On Saturday, people dropped off unwanted medications off at Erie City Hall or the Millcreek Township Building.
State police also had multiple drop-off locations Saturday at their barracks in Lawrence Park, Meadville and Corry.
There are permanent drop off locations year-round at the Erie County Courthouse and numerous police departments including Girard, Edinboro, Corry, Lawrence Park Township and North East Borough.
