Xavier and Tina Williams Business Academy applications due by March 22
EDINBORO, Pa. – Drawing upon the success of the past six years, Edinboro University will again welcome young men and women from high schools across the U.S. to campus for the Xavier and Tina Williams Summer Youth Business Academy.
Hosted by Edinboro’s School of Business, the academy will be held June 9-13 on Edinboro’s main campus and is open to all students entering grades 10-12. Through the generosity of the academy’s namesake benefactors, AT&T executive and Edinboro alumnus Xavier Williams (’89) and his wife, Tina, scholarships will be available to cover the cost for each participant.
Academy students gain business acumen through immersive seminars focused on team building, business strategy, management, finance, marketing, problem-solving and financial planning for college. Throughout the program, students will have access to faculty from Edinboro’s School of Business as well as local business leaders.
“This program has served more than one hundred students from over fifty schools in the last six years,” said Dr. Scott Miller, dean of Edinboro’s School of Business. “Students learn about business networking and present business plans at the end of the week to a panel of judges from the business community.”
During the camp, students will work in groups to create a product or service that solves a common problem in society. Each team will then devise a plan for building and marketing their product or service. At the conclusion of the academy, each group will pitch their product in a venture capital-style presentation to a panel of judges comprised of Edinboro faculty and regional business leaders.
Students reside on Edinboro University’s campus residence halls during the academy. The cost of this residency is included in the student’s scholarship.
To be considered for the Xavier and Tina Williams Summer Youth Business Academy, students must complete an application form by March 22. A teacher or guidance counselor must also nominate the student. The Student Application Form and link to the teacher/counselor recommendation can be found at www.edinboro.edu/businessacademy.
Past participants of the Summer Youth Business Academy are invited to participate in the newly established Fellows Program. Fellows will enhance their leadership skills by assisting academy coaches and serving as mentors to first-time participants. The application for the fellows program can be found at http://bit.ly/SYBAFellow.
