The Erie County HIV task force and department of health were walking for a cause Monday afternoon.
The purpose of the walk is to bring awareness about ways to treat and prevent HIV. According to the HIV taskforce, rates of the disease have been rising around the Erie region. They encourage people in Erie County to get tested annually. County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper joined in on the 1.5 mile HIV awareness walk.
“There’s so many people out there that have it and don’t know that they have it,” said Laura Beckes. “So they’re spreading it to other people and it’s just a domino effect. And we really want to get people into treatment as soon as possible. “
