An Erie teenager who is facing charges after threatening to shoot up a school on social media. In reaction, parents of Erie High School students voicing their concerns.
A 17-year-old is charged with terroristic threats and disorderly conduct after posting a picture of himself holding what appeared to be an assault rifle, threatening to “shoot up” his school. One Erie High mother is not sure what to even tell her daughter.
Amy Nordstrom, Mother of an Erie High School Senior, says she was, “Questioning myself as a parent – am I taking her someplace safe? Is she going to be ok? Is this going to be an all-day thing?” This was just one parent’s reaction to the picture all over social media of an Erie High School student holding a gun, with the text ‘ready to shoot up the school tomorrow’ written at the bottom.
Erie Police Chief Don Dacus saying, “this couldn’t come at a worse possible time to pull a stunt like this”. He also tells us they were made aware of the threat Thursday night. Police brought the 17-year-old suspect in for questioning but were forced to release him into the custody of his parents.
He also tells us, “we notified the DA’s office and juvenile probation last night. They’re the only ones who can authorize detention of a juvenile. They refused to detain last night.”
The student previously attended Cathedral Prep. and is now at Erie High School. Dacus says they made both schools aware of the situation. The suspect was taken into custody Friday morning after showing up at Erie High School with his parents. He is charged with juvenile terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.
Classes went on as normal as possible, and the administration says they’re conducting their own investigation. Superintendent Brian Polito says, “We have a strong support system up there and we have a lot of people out in the halls. We have our support teams that are there to address any issues that come up or any concerns the students may bring.”
Nordstrom says, “these kids are going to lose their sense of security in a place where they’re supposed to feel secure.”
The gun in the photo. was found to be an airsoft pellet gun. The school district telling us they can’t comment on the status of the student at this time.
