Erie School District increasing efforts to hire minority teachers.
The district is seeking to increase diversity among its teaching staff, which is currently 97% white. There’s an effort to recruit teachers from nearby cities. Another plan is to provide students interested in becoming teachers with resources or a path to return to teach for the district.
President of the NAACP, Gary Horton, says studies show that having teachers that look like the students can help student success. “An increase in black educators at all levels, in particular, the lower grades, will have a positive impact on behavior, as well as academic achievement and attendance”.
The NAACP is encouraging the district to fund the recruitment efforts by possibly reaching out to area businesses.
