ERIE, Pa. — Two expectant mothers brought in the new year at Magee-Womens Hospital at UPMC Hamot.

They were hospitalized three rooms apart and gave birth four hours apart, but the connection does not end there.

At 12:54 a.m. New Year’s Day, Hawa Abdi gave birth to Ramil Osman, a baby boy weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces.

Abdi, who gave birth more than a week before the expected due date, said she was happy to welcome her son early.

“Really happy, because I wanted him earlier than the due date, because I didn’t want to wait that long.”

A few rooms away stayed Farhia Muya, Abdi’s aunt. Muya gave birth to an 8 pound, 11 ounce boy named Idiris Ali.

The mothers say with the cousins sharing birthdays, they will have many reasons to celebrate New Year’s Day.

“We can plan each other’s birthday parties,” said Abdi.
