Presidential candidate Donald Trump announced through his website Monday he will be making a stop on the campaign trail in Erie Friday afternoon.
But why Erie and why now?
Political experts are saying this campaign stop in Erie could ultimately determine the election.
Dr. Michael Federici of Mercyhurst University said Pennsylvania is the most important state to win this November and if Trump can win Erie County he can win the state.
“For him to win, he has to win Pennsylvania, he has to win Ohio, he has to win Florida,” Federici said. “There are a few of those big, rich states in electoral votes he must win. And I would even go so far as to say Pennsylvania is the single most important state for him to win.”
But why Erie?
Federici said trends show Democrats do better in urban areas of Pennsylvania and Republicans in rural.
But he says Erie, particularly Erie County, is a hybrid of both.
“It’s not exactly urban,” Federici said. “It’s not exactly rural. So it’s a good barometer for what happens in the state as a whole. If you can win Erie County, you probably can carry the state.”
The chairman of the Erie County Republican Party said this is the perfect opportunity for everyone to come form their own opinion of Trump.
