Former Erie Bishop & University President among 51 named by Diocese in sex abuse investigation

Local News

The Diocese of Erie is releasing the names of priests and laypersons credibly accused of sexual abuse.

The list consists of 51 names, all religious leaders within the Diocese of Erie credibly accused of sexual abuse, both alive and deceased.

This morning, Bishop Lawrence Persico, with a heavy heart, presented the names of all 51 priests and laypersons. The list includes 34 priests, 20 of which have passed away and 17 laypersons, 2 of which are deceased.

Bishop Persico tells us he understands there are people with strong emotions on both sides on whether releasing the names was the right thing to do.  But, he says he knows this is a step in the right direction and something the Diocese has been working toward for several years.

Persico says apologies are not enough and that’s why the diocese is also presenting major changes to the Protection of Children and Youth Police.

We’ll have more information on the preventative measures coming up in our evening shows.
