Former PA pediatrician sentenced to 79-158 years, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing 31 children

A former Pennsylvania pediatrician will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars for sexually abusing children.

Johnnie Barto received a sentence of 79-158 years in prison today. The 71-year-old pleaded guilty to sexually abusing 31 children.

Most of Barto’s victims were boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12.  The cases against him date back to the late 1980’s.

When the state attorney general announced the sentence today, he was surrounded by several women who say they are victims of the former doctor.

PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro says, “Over the last number of decades, powerful institutions be immune from prosecution. Powerful institutions seemingly above the law. We’ve seen that here in the Catholic Church. You see it in Hollywood. You see it in politics. And we saw it here in this community with a pediatrician for too long. But you see I think there is a reckoning going on in this country and powerful people like these survivors are standing up and speaking up.”

As a part of the sentencing, he has also been declared a sexually violent predator. He will have to register as a sex offender.
