A business owner trying to recover from a devastating fire asks the city for help as he tries to rebuild his business.
Fred Barbato went before the city this afternoon asking for an exception and not require a sprinkler system in his temporary location. Per building code, sprinklers are required for businesses selling upholstered furniture.
Barbato argued there aren’t any businesses adjacent to his that would be in danger if a fire would occur.
He also noted he plans to have a 24/7 smoke detector that would automatically alert the fire department if smoke was detected. However, for safety reasons, the board denied Barbato’s request.
Barbato says he’s locked into his lease in liberty plaza for one year but will begin his search for a permanent location with a sprinkler system.
