GE hosts STEM program for girls

Local News

Erie area middle school girls spend the week learning about all things “STEM” through a special educational program.

GE Transportation and Penn State Behrend hosted the free week-long camp for nearly 50 seventh and eighth grade girls.  The program was designed to stimulate and maintain interest in science, engineering, technology and math.  Men far outnumber women in these particular fields.

Cathy Heiman, of Global Communications tells us, “everything you do is somehow connected to STEM… and women have a different perspective. So making sure you’ve got that breadth is extremely important.”

Student, Madelynne Pollock is excited about the program.  “I’m really interested! I saw Nuclear Engineering, which sounds really cool.”
GE has made a commitment to what they call ‘Balancing the Equation’ and they’re looking for 20,000 women in STEM fields by the year 2020.
