Unionized workers at General Electric are planning an information picket at 2pm this afternoon. That comes in front of a strike authorization vote set for Saturday.
The workers are unhappy with the contract offer given to them by the Wabtec Corporation which is buying GE’s Transportation Division. That deal could close Monday.
According to social media reports from the unions, Wabtec wants to reduce the pay for new workers and make changes in the contract language the company says is required to stay competitive.
The unions are getting some high-profile support. Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders sent a letter to Wabtec President Raymond Betler urging him to maintain the current contract and promising to monitor the situation as it develops.
