GEEDC asking for tax-exempt status back

Local News

The landlord agency that oversees Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) properties is asking to have its tax-exempt status restored.

The Greater Erie Economic Development Corporation, or GEEDC, owns two GECAC buildings, most notably the agency’s headquarters at 9th and Peach streets.  That group lost its tax-exempt status in a ruling on April 9th.

The question is whether the landlord agency meets enough of the charitable requirements to be considered tax-exempt by itself or if it should be taxed like any other landlord.

A hearing about the ongoing dispute is expected later this summer.
