On April 15th – 17th, 2016 Millions of children and youth world-wide are getting ready to partner with schools, organizations, public officials, media, and families to coordinate the 29th Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), is the largest service event in the world and the only one celebrating the contributions youth make 365 days of the year.
This international event will be celebrated throughout Erie County on Saturday, April 16th starting at East High with registration beginning at 7:30 am. Participation of more than 1,000 youth will be expected. These youth in grades 6th -12th grade will represent their schools, churches, youth organizations and various social groups. Some of the projects consist of youth beautifying the garden at the Soldiers and Sailors Home, bowling with youth from Erie Homes for Children Adults, doing inventory and stocking shelves at Second Harvest Food Bank, clean up at Grace House and providing new toys, furniture and books for the children room at the Office of Children and Youth.
Coordinated on a national level by Youth Service America (YSA) and State Farm, GYSD is now celebrated in over 100 countries and 3 continents. GYSD Erie is being coordinated by the Youth Leadership Institute of Erie. Young people, participating in youth-led service and service-learning initiatives, address critical issues in the Erie community such as homelessness and hunger, children and youth, the environment, the elderly and veterans and individuals with special needs. YSA (Youth Service America) improves communities by increasing the number and the diversity of young people, serving in substantive roles.
Through the GYSD Erie project, the Youth Leadership Institute of Erie hopes to develop youth in grades 6-12 into leaders who are informed, motivated and committed to working toward an improved quality of life for themselves as well as their community. All of the youth and volunteers will meet at East High School for registration and beginning activities from 7:30 am – 9:00 am. Youth immediately thereafter will be bused to various learning sites in the community from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Youth will return to East High school after 1:00 pm for lunch, reflection, a youth summit and a celebration, which will end our day at 3:00 pm.
“Global Youth Service Day helps the youth feel that they are part of a team, and that there is more that they can do to help the community.”
