Experts say a safe and stable home can make all the difference for someone struggling with addiction. Now, the governor is launching a new effort with that idea in mind.
Governor Tom Wolf announced a new state program that would provide $15 million for an opioid housing initiative. The program would fund a minimum of eight pilot projects in eligible communities across the commonwealth; Erie among that list.
The proposed projects must help individuals with opioid addiction find and maintain housing. Experts say the initiative is great news for organizations like Gaudenzia Erie.
Jason Kisielewski, of Gaudenzia Erie, says, “Giving them that sense of community and really a sense of self-worth. If you provide somebody with safe, stable housing it can really help them not only just on their recovery but I think their overall well being.”
Representatives with Gaudenzia say they do plan on applying for funding through the initiative. They anticipate a lengthy application process.
