Local State Representative Pat Harkins is renewing efforts to get a worker’s safety bill passed into law.
Harkins made his comments during a workers rights rally that included calls for increased safety, a liveable wage, and protections to participate in unions.
Harkins has reintroduced ‘Jake’s Law’ that would extend federal workplace protections to state workers. It’s named for Jake Schwab, an EMTA employee who was killed on the job.
Harkins says, “There’s no reason that public sector employees should not have the same OSHA protections in place as the private sector employees and we won’t give up until we have this accomplished.”
Jake’s Law failed to be considered last year by the Republican-controlled Labor and Industry Committee.
