Local News

Before the march honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Horton family hosted a special church service to honor Dr. King and the Civil Rights Advocates here in Erie who are inspired by his efforts.

Howard and Mildred Horton are the parents of Gary and Andre Horton, their work with needy children and the community has inspired generations of activism in their family.

A special church service was held today at Saint James AME Church to honor their work, inspired by Dr. King.

Nicci Page and Khadija Horton, Grandchildren of Howard and Mildred, say, “There is still much work to be done.  And at the end of King’s life, he had kind of repositioned to talk about poverty and how poverty impacts everyone.  And so, we also want to get that message out, that in addition to remembering the past and what has been done, the mission now is to eradicate poverty.”

Saint James is also donating to a scholarship fund at Gannon to help continue civil rights work in the community.
