Local public health workers are watching the west coast pretty closely these days, with 268 cases of measles reported.
Currently, there are six active outbreaks in five states and overall cases have been reported in 15 states. So far, there have been no reported cases in our area, but that situation can change rapidly.
It’s an illness that can spread rapidly and can be deadly, as well.
Charlotte Berringer, Director of Nursing for the Erie County Department of Health, tells us, “Unfortunately, one or two out of a thousand will die, so measles disease is a serious infection, potentially, it’s a viral disease and it is spread very easily from person to person”.
The initial outbreak started in Washington state in January.
