Erie police have charged 57-year-old Billy Ray Gordon with criminal homicide and third degree murder for the stabbing death of his wife.

Gordon was arraigned Wednesday evening in front of Erie 2nd Ward District Judge Paul Urbaniak on charges that include homicide, aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by police, an unnamed witness told officers that Gordon admitted to killing his wife by stabbing her multiple times.

He gave the witness pants and a shirt covered in blood. The witness said Gordon told him to then dispose of the clothes.

Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers said it was a collaborative effort among detectives that led to this formal arraignment.

Gordon is currently in the Erie County Prison and has been in the prison on $150,000 bond because of his alleged involvement in two bank robberies around the Erie area.

Police are still investigating the details surrounding those robberies.

Erie police discovered the body of Linda Gordon, 51, in a grassy area in the 1500 block of East 19th Street between Camphausen and Schaal avenues July 22.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said she was stabbed multiple times in the torso.

Police said that where the body was found was not the sight of the murder.
