Protests on immigration are not limited to the border. Hundreds gather to protest against a Trump Administration policy they say separates families at the border.
Where are the children? That’s the question people at this rally want answered. More than 100 people, including immigrant families, faith-based organizations, and Congressman Joaquin Castro attending tonight’s rally at the historic Guadalupe Plaza on the city’s Westside.
They’re calling for an end to the Trump Administration’s immigration policies separating migrant children from their parents at the US border.
“Which is worse, You stay back home and get killed or come over here and get your children taken away?”
“When I see images of children’s shoes without the children and see the toys, it is just upsetting that there is no understanding of what a family is.”
Last month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Homeland Security Department would now be referring all illegal border crossings for prosection. That means parents would go to detention centers, leaving children unaccompanied. Sessions saying, “If you don’t want your child separated, then don’t bring them across the border illegally.”
Congressman Castro saying there’s a better way to handle immigration but, he says, ripping families apart for punishment is not the way. “This treatment of people is wrong. Just because they cross the border doesn’t make them non-human.”
