The Erie Art Museum’s Education & Folk Art Director, Kelly Armor, was named Outstanding Museum Art Educator of 2017 by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA).

Armor, who has been at the Erie Art Museum since 2003, was recognized by PAEA for her dedication to the arts at the October 21st ceremony held in Pittsburgh, PA.

A PAEA representative stated, “She is making a radical and profound difference in the community, state, and nation. Her personal–professional persona transcends her job title because of the way she inspires those around her to work for equality, value diversity, and engage art for life. Her programs, such as Kids as Curators and Old Songs New Opportunities make her an effective agent in arenas that bring people together through the arts. Her work is gaining national attention and grant funding as a result of her hard work in her local community.”

Griffin Currie, Armor’s former intern and current art teacher at Erie’s new Mother Theresa Academy, was also honored at the ceremony with the 2017 Outstanding New Professional Art Educator award.

“Old Songs New Opportunities has taught me wonderful songs from all over the world. I love using them as a learning tool. My students can make connections with their artwork and different countries through the music and movements,” said Currie.

The Pennsylvania Art Education Association gives awards annually to focus professional attention on quality art education and exemplary art educators, increase public awareness of the importance of quality art education, set standards for quality art education and show how they can be achieved, and provide tangible recognition of achievement, earn respect of colleagues, and enhance professional opportunities for PAEA members.
