Volunteers prepare for a weekend cleanup. The Lake Erie International Coastal Cleanup will be this Saturday.
Today, coordinators review how to properly collect data and run through safety information. Organizers say between 500 and 1,000 people will pick up garbage and recycle items left near the water. Crews cover 14 watershed locations, including the Presque Isle beaches.
Environmental Planner, Jacob Moore, says, “If you go out on the beach today, you can find cigarette butts and any assortment of trash, and what we’re trying to do is encompass this by going out and collecting trash, collecting data on that trash, and working with partnering organizations to develop information and educational materials.”
Organizers say they’ll use the data to educate people on the littering problem in Erie County and across the country.
