Three local athletes will represent the United States in a national competition.
The third World Deaf Ice Hockey Championships will be in Amherst, New York next week.
Erie natives Bo Ruef and Miles Gates are playing for the U.S men’s team. Dominique Magee, another Erie athlete, has been selected for the first women’s team.
The hockey players will be leaving Easter Sunday to train in Amherst.
“There’s no greater feeling than putting a USA jersey on and every time we go out there we just try to represent our country the best we can,” hockey player Bo Ruef said.
Ruef’s teammate Miles Gates told us, “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m grateful. Not everybody gets this opportunity to do something great for their country and I feel grateful to have the opportunity.”
Ruef and Gates have both played internationally before. They competed in the first and second World Deaf Games, and said they’re excited to represent the U.S. for a third time.
