Local Dairy Queen takes a bow

Local News

ERIE, Pa. — Selling Blizzards and other creamy desserts, a longtime ice cream parlor served its last customers Monday night.

Located in Millcreek Township’s West Erie Plaza since 2000, Dairy Queen closed its door for good.

Bill Neumaier, owner of the longest-running family-owned Dairy Queen franchise, made the decision to retire after 60 years of business.

He celebrated the long run by hosting a farewell gathering for current and past employees.

Neumaier said, “Everybody’s been thanking me (saying) I made it possible, but my employees made it happen.”

Manager Josh Hanko said, “So many people have come in: ‘Why are you closing? We’re going to miss you guys. We only come to this one.’ You ask them where they’re going to go next and they say: ‘nowhere;’ because this is where they find home and it’s welcoming to them.”

About 30 former employees were expected to attend the celebration, including some traveling from as far as Pittsburgh.
