With temperatures in the single digits, having a warm place to sleep is essential. The chance of hypothermia setting in is more likely for those without shelter. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention at least 1,000 people die each year from hypothermia. The Erie area has several resources for those searching for a place to keep warm.
1) City Mission located on French Street serves free public lunch to men, women, and children from 11:30 – 12:30 daily.
2) The Upper Room on Peach Street, shelter/warming center. Open from 8 AM to 4 PM. The Center shuts down at 4 PM for the hour, then reopens at 5 PM till 11 PM.
3) Mental Health Association of Northwestern PA on Peach Street, opens as an overnight warming center from 11 PM till 7:30 AM. The warming center operates when temperatures are 20 degrees or below.
