The royal wedding of Prince Harry and American Actress Meghan Markle is less than a day away.
Millions of people across the globe will be tuning in for the big day. Why is there such an obsession with the British monarchy and their royal weddings? Dr. Ben Scharff, a History Professor at Mercyhurst University, says the obsession is connected to the people’s long tradition of having a monarchy.
In the last 300+ years, the British monarchy has not been seen as an institution of authority, rather an institution of unity. Therefore, the royals serve as a figure to unite people. Scharff says, “A symbolic institution that symbolizes unity and that requires a certain level of respect and awe right from the people. That’s the role that the monarchy has played so you can think of them, yeah, in the way some Americans feel about celebrities.”
The two are tying the knot at Saint George’s Chapel at the Windsor Castle in England tomorrow. So, what do you think about the royal wedding? We asked locals…
Heather says, “A lot of people like to see the Royalties and stuff like that going on, It’s nice to see people happy”.
Sjerri says, “I really don’t care. We have bigger issues than to worry about a wedding”.
Mike says, “I don’t really care. I’m more worried about gas prices and the economy”.
Dave says, “I don’t think its important to our daily lives”.
