The Pennsylvania Games Commission has filed charges against an Erie County man who fatally shot a bald eagle.

Daniel Haddix who lives on South Hill Road faces $10,000 in fines and up to two years in prison.  Haddix, who used a small caliber rifle, says he feared the eagle would harm his barn cats.

On the state level, the Games commission is working on charging Haddix a higher fine and a misdemeanor.

State Game Cadet Jared Schibik says, “it symbolizes our country and just going out and shooting it is a really bad choice.  Give us a call and we’ll see what we can do and work with you.”

The charges have been filed with McKean Township.
