Man walks across country to support homeless veterans

Local News

A Jamestown, N.Y., native is walking the perimeter of the U.S. to support homeless veterans.

Leroy Bailey arrived in Erie Tuesday afternoon after walking more than 8,700 miles around the country.

He comes from a family of veterans and is walking to spread awareness about homeless service men and women.

Bailey left Virginia Beach, Va., in June 2014 and is expected to return in October.

“I started June 30, 2014 and it’s grueling, it is really really grueling,” Bailey said. “But the reason I got started was because I complained to God so much that shelters weren’t being built to support veterans and he said if I want to build shelters around the nation I had to walk the perimeter to do it.”

On Tuesday Bailey’s mother came from Jamestown to Erie for a reunion with her son.

Bailey still has 3,200 miles left to walk.
