The verbal confrontation between Erie City Councilman Mel Witherspoon and an Erie resident has a lot of people talking.  Tonight, Mayor Joe Schember shares his reaction.

Councilman Mel Witherspoon apologized publicly for his conduct during a council meeting Wednesday morning.  It happened after Erie Resident Thomas Johnson called for Council President Sony Arrington to resign.

As Witherspoon and Johnson argued, the councilman told Johnson, “I’ll see you outside”.  Both Witherspoon and Johnson headed for the lobby.  Police and several residents intervened.

Later in the meeting, Witherspoon apologized publicly for his conduct.  Mayor Joe Schember says he communicated with Witherspoon.  Schember tells us, “I was really pleased that Mel apologized in his remarks at the end for what had happened, and I don’t believe it will ever happen again to be honest. I know Mel well. He’s a good person.”
