Community leaders gathered at the Erie Playhouse and were treated to a preview performance of the upcoming “The Sound of Music” production.

Erie Mayor Joe Schember held his weekly meeting and Facebook livestream at the playhouse. The performance was livestreamed.

The playhouse executive director, Kate Neubert-Lechner, said “The Sound of Music” is a family-friendly musical, and a favorite to many.

The pandemic hit communities hard, Neubert-Lechner added. Throughout the pandemic, patrons were not allowed to gather for shows. But now, with tools like vaccinations, the community can get together again and enjoy live theater.

“We are really thrilled to see audiences start to come back through the doors,” Neubert-Lechner said. “In the past we were having to rehearse with masks on. We’re finally able to take them off and see everyone’s faces during rehearsal, which is fantastic, and this is one of our largest casts to date since before the pandemic, and we’re just thrilled to see everyone’s faces back on stage again.”

Performances of “The Sound of Music” begin on Friday, Sept. 16 and run through Sunday, Oct. 2.
