Volunteers spend the afternoon reading to elementary school students.
Once a month, the Kiwanis Club rounds up volunteers to read to classes at Lincoln Elementary. Today, players on Mercyhurst’s football team join their effort. Kiwanis Club President Bill Sapone says they’ve had a partnership with Lincoln for more than a year. He says the Hooked on Books program is a win-win for the volunteers and the students. “It’s just such a great experience to see these young minds listening and just learning and absorbing as we read a book to them.”
The students get to keep the books read to them throughout the program. Last year, the Kiwanis donated $8,000 worth of books to the school library.
