Hundreds of freshmen kick off their college careers with gloves and shovels. It’s Mercyhurst University’s Annual Day of Service.
700 new students spend the day out in the community. Students complete projects at 18 locations throughout Erie, including the art museum, the zoo, and the Soldiers and Sailors Home. Coordinators say the day of service gives students a taste of the university’s core values.
Trisha Dimatteo, IMU Facilitator says, “I think it just shows exactly what Mercyhurst stands for. You know, it’s a university of service and mercy and giving back before classes even start is just such a great opportunity for the students to get involved in the community and do what Mercyhurst stands for.”
Together, the students will complete around 1400 community service hours.
