The military order of the Purple Heart is honoring a local college for its service to veterans.

Mercyhurst University is now the second college in Pennsylvania to be designated a Purple Heart University. The recognition highlights the university’s work, providing services to veterans and their families.

To further this mission, Mercyhurst is also launching a scholarship fund, not only for Purple Heart recipients but their spouses as well.

Amy Burniston, Wife of Purple Heart Recipient Ryan Burniston, tells us, “I hope that we’re sending a message to our traditional student body that may not have a connection to Military life that we again hold our veterans in the utmost, highest regard.”

Ryan tells us, “Never in my day would I have thought any of this would take place but I’m very happy and thrilled. I think down the line a lot of people are gonna benefit from this.”

Mercyhurst is home to 54 student-veterans, 12 with combat deployments.
