A new Irish-themed pub is heading to Mercyhurst University this spring. The University is even bringing back an alumnus to help out.
It is looking good, still very much in the construction phase. The pub is going to be located in the student union where the Laker Inn is. While some universities are trying to cut down on drinking, Mercyhurst is creating a pub for students to conveniently do it right on campus called, ‘The Roost’.
This comes after changes to housing rules implemented by the university say that students have to live on campus if they are not from the Erie area.
President of Mercyhurst University Michael Victor says, “It’s for safety reasons and for a social place, a gathering place on campus. We decided to construct it in a rather unused place in our student union”.
Construction is just underway and with a little bit of imagination, you can see where the bar is going to be. Between two pillars, there will be seating for 50 – 60 people immersing themselves in the Irish tradition.
Sticking with the university’s Irish upbringing, they brought on board Erie Native and Mercyhurst Alumni John Melody as a consultant for the pub to ensure that it kept with an authentic, Irish feel.
Melody tells us, “We have been able to source a lot of the savage and a lot of the stuff we are going to be putting into the pub from Ireland. it will give it a really, really true authentic feeling.”
He also says that they will place imported parts on the back bar, use Irish decor, and stained glass to make the pub feel like you’re in Ireland.
Mercyhurst Student Body President Vincent Marrazoo says that this is going to be a great way for students to meet and hang out. “I think it will be a really unique experience for students, something that isn’t offered by other colleges or universities in the area.”
University officials say that they do plan on opening to the public and hope to have the project completed and opened by the end of March.
