ERIE, Pa. — Carolers kicked off Mercyhurst University’s tree lighting ceremony.
Hundreds of students and members of the Mercyhurst community gathered in front of Old Main to watch the lighting of a new 30-foot tall artificial tree near the statue of the Virgin Mary.
The university staff said the tree celebrates the holiday season and honors the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy.
Sr. Lisa Mary McCartney, the only remaining full-time Sister of Mercy at the institution, joined President Michael Victor to light the tree.
She said she was excited about “getting the tree and having this to start a new tradition at Mercyhurst.”
Sophomore Larry Stauv attended with friends and took photos.
“Well, just seeing all of these smiling faces just brought even a bigger smile to my own face, and I just can’t wait for all of the holiday cheers to come,” he said.
The grounds in front of Old Main was a new location for the event. In previous years, the university hosted the tree lighting outside of the Student Union.
