City Councilman Bob Merski says aggressive panhandling needs to stop. The councilman plans to present a resolution at tonight’s council meeting requesting the city solicitor to draft an ordinance that would ban aggressive begging and soliciting.
Merski says he’s received numerous complaints from residents, especially in downtown Erie, saying they don’t feel safe when people follow them and don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
Merski says, “In a society, we help each other out, but we also have the expectation of safety when we go to events in our downtown. If we want to make Erie a community of choice, we have to make sure that people feel safe.”
Merski says through such an ordinance, he hopes to encourage resources for people who might otherwise solicit.
The council meeting begins at 7:30pm.
