Celebrate Erie wasn’t the only thing happening over the weekend. The 46th Miss Wheelchair America was crowned at the Ambassador Conference Center on Saturday.
Participants from across the country were in Erie last week preparing for the weekend’s competition. The mission of Miss Wheelchair America is to provide an opportunity of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to successfully educate and advocate for the more than 54 million Americans living with disabilities.
It was Miss Wheelchair Minnesota, Sheri Melander Smith, who was crowned Miss Wheelchair America, 2018.
Melander-Smith tells us “I hope to promote wellness within the disability community, but not exclusively. I think everyone should live their very best life possible, regardless of what happens in their life. There’s always hope and with hope, we can make changes.”
This is a competition based on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for persons with disabilities.
