More on Youngstown fire that took the lives of five children

Local News

A mother jumped for her life when fire took over her home; now she’s mourning the loss of her five children.

The home went up in flames overnight.  The woman living inside, 26-year-old America Acevedo, jumped from the second-story window.  She told first responders her children were still inside.

Two of the children died at the scene while three were rescued and taken to Mercy Health in Youngstown where they succumbed to their injuries.

A friend of the family says, “I know she was a really great mother. I know she was a really hard worker. I know her kids were amazing, full of life, and just beautiful”.

The mother remains hospitalized, being treated for injuries sustained when she lept for her life.

The children included one-year-old twins, a two-year-old, a three-year-old, and a nine-year-old.  The cause is believed to be accidental, but remains under investigation.
