Motorcycle deaths are down thanks to biker community

Local News

Motorcycle deaths are down in Erie County and the coroner says that’s because of action taken within the biker community.

The Erie County Coroner’ss 2018 Death Report indicates seven people were killed in motorcycle-related accidents. But, that number is down from the previous year.

President of the Injured Motorcycle Riders Foundation Steve Weston says motorcycle groups held several meetings to raise awareness about driver safety.  He tells us that’s when riders began policing themselves.

“When somebody gets killed, that person was known by lots of people. The tightness of the motorcycling community is a result of that and so, that resonates out. And, when you lose someone that’s close to you, which I have, I guess I could say the road to safety is covered in blood.”

The Injured Motorcycle Riders Foundation will be holding a fundraiser on March 16th.
