Law enforcement officers and educators spend Presidents Day under the same roof, learning more about protecting schools.
When parents drop their children off at school, the expectation is that they’ll be safe throughout the day. As school shootings become more common, protecting students becomes a more challenging and urgent task.
National School Safety Expert Dave Grossman is speaking to teachers, safety officers, and law enforcement representatives at Union City High School.
Grossman is discussing the importance of safety in schools, how to prevent an active shooter situation, in addition to providing guidance as to how to protect students and teachers in the most efficient ways possible.
Grossman is the author of ‘On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society’. The book is an analysis of the psychological process involved with killing another human being.
Event Coordinator Steve Oler says the strong turnout shows a better understanding of the need to make security changes this day in age.
Oler says, “They’re counting on us to make sure that those kids are safe for the next eight hours so that’s one of the most important things we can do, if not the most important thing. It’s great to educate them, but we have to make sure that they get back to their parents safely.”
Security officers from local universities were also in attendance at the lecture.
