For today’s Wild Stuff, we’re in the horse barn at the Erie Zoo to see their newest family members. They are two Canadian lynx kittens born about two weeks ago.
This is the second litter born here to parents Martina and Russell. Martina gave birth to them in a special cubbing den and they will stay there for a few months until they can move out of the box on their own. Dad typically has nothing to do with raising little ones.
The zoo set a monitor up in the barn so that guests can see them as they grow up. Mom is a great mom and is pretty protective so she keeps a close watch over them, but you should be able to get a look at them.
To give you some perspective, they fit in the palm of my hand. Their eyes just opened a day or so ago. In about 6 more weeks, we will briefly separate them from mom to vaccinate them, give them a physical and determine their sexes. We will repeat that a few times until they get all the veterinary attention they require. In the meantime, you can see them here.
