New LECOM study finds link between autism and hearing problems in children

A new study is looking at the link between autism and hearing problems in children.  That study performed right here in Erie at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Professor of Anatomy at LECOM, Randy Kulesza, led the small team which compared the hearing of people with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Their findings may help children get diagnosed earlier so they can lead more productive lives.

Kulesza says, "We found a very small part of their brain stem that had consistently fewer neurons. It was consistently abnormal across all of the subjects that we studied.  And, we saw this change in individuals that are as young as two-years-old. So, we reasoned that if these changes are there at birth that the hearing deficits, the impairments were there as well."
